Last week the B.R.I.D.G.E.S. class learned how to make a cake in a mug for their Community Based Instruction (CBI), YUM! Before going to Walmart, they had to work in teams to determine the quantity of each ingredient they needed to buy for the entire class and to stay within their budget. Students quickly learned that some products cost more if you buy a name brand.
On the day of the trip to Walmart, students worked with their partner to locate the item they had to buy, make sure it was the correct size and within their budget. A few students had to problem solve which size package to buy when it did not match with the amount they needed.
All the students paid for their items at the Self-Checkout. This gave students the opportunity to use their problem-solving skills when the item did not scan correctly.
During the next class meeting, each student followed the recipe (Chocolate or Vanilla Cake in a Mug) and put it in the microwave to cook. They learned that some microwaves cook faster than others. Everyone agreed their cakes were DELICIOUS!!
Great job students for using your Budgeting, Resources, Independence, Growth, Empowerment and Social Skills during the CBI!
