The HDS B.R.I.D.G.E.S students had a lesson in Supportive Decision Making and Self-Advocacy today with special guest Ally Walford from the Family Network on Disabilities (FND). Ally spoke to the students about the value of being able to Self-Advocate and Supportive Decision Making with the help of their family, job coach, and/or counselor.

Ally explained to the students how their support team could help in the process of helping them to decide what choices would be best in their decision making. She also shared that the student’s support team helps them to understand their choices, as well as the pros and cons of the decisions they have to make. Several of the students shared that they had a reliable network of people they could turn to for support.

Blake talked with the class about his experiences working at Publix. Blake has self-advocated on many different occasions over the past 4 years. The most recent time was when he asked to be given extra hours because he puts in a lot of effort and is a hard worker. Blake recently requested a promotion. He is now working in Customer Service! We are so proud of Blake!

We would like to thank Ally for taking the time to visit the class and discuss the value of Supported Decision Making and Self-Advocacy!
