Ice Cream Sundae Challenge

Ice Cream Sundae Challenge

Vanilla, chocolate or strawberry were the decisions the B.R.I.D.G.E.S. students had to make for their Community Based Instruction (CBI) at Publix. Students were given the challenge to decide in their individual groups what ingredients they’d want for their ice cream sundaes.

The challenge was this: the group budget was $15.00 with tax included, enough ice cream must be purchased for everyone in the group, and to buy at least 3 toppings. Prior to going out on the CBI, students met in their groups to decide which flavors of ice cream and toppings they all liked. Once they came up with their lists, they had to agree which ones they would be purchasing. Students had to use compromising and negotiating skills to reach their agreement.

After students finished shopping for their ingredients for the ice cream sundae challenge, they headed back to school. This is where the fun began! Students were able to create their own sundaes and even share toppings they purchased with one another.

Each group did a great job staying within their budget and agreeing on the purchases they made for their sundaes. What a great CBI that ended up with a tasty treat!

Give Miami Day!

Give Miami Day!

After 6 exciting and fast paced months preparing for our very first experience participating in Give Miami Day, WE FINALLY DID IT!!! The HDS Foundation successfully reached and surpassed our goal of $20,000!

The months of October and November consisted of a variety of events for our staff to participated in such as: Zoom calls, socials, Sports Day, a pep rally, and celebrations! Events were planned both in- house and virtually so all HDS staff could have a chance to become invested into our Give Miami Day Campaign. We kickstarted our company campaign with an ice cream social where the HDS Foundation educated the staff about our programs, and how they support teens and young adults on the Autism Spectrum learn life skills to help students transition to their post- secondary journey. The following week, we got competitive and had a sports day where the staff was divided into teams and competed against each other by playing Jeopardy and answering questions about Give Miami.

As a final push for our campaign, we had a pep rally the day before Give Miami Day to get ready for the big day! HDS Ambassadors, Kate and Miguel led the staff in many cheers and motivated everyone to donate! Once the day finally arrived, November 18th, staff showed their dedication and support by taking 30 minutes from their schedule to reach out to friends and family to remind them to donate to HDS Foundation. As the day progressed, we eagerly watched our donations continue to increase and our goal thermometer get filled up.

Finally, about an hour before Give Miami ended, the HDS Foundation had exceeded its goal of $20,000!! We are incredibly grateful for all those who donated to make this possible. We can’t wait to begin to reach out to more high schools to provide our B.R.I.D.G.E.S. Grant to teach the students life schools about Budgeting, Resources, Independence, Growth, Empowerment and Social Skills.

Office Depot Challenge

Every week, the B.R.I.D.G.E.S. class has their Community Based Instruction trip where students are able to practice their skills. For this CBI, the students put their budgeting skills to the test. Upon arrival, students were divided into groups of 3-4 and were handed a $15 gift card along with a list of office supplies the class needs. The purpose of this activity was for students to come together and buy as many items as they could while staying under budget (including tax). It was exciting to see the students become super competitive and collaborative with one another. The winning team (Nick D, Nick DT and Ethan) bought 9 items at a total of $13.13.

This activity addressed the B.R.I.D.G.E.S. areas of Budgeting, Independence, and Social skills. Stay tuned for the next CBI!

Flanigan’s

Flanigan’s

Our students enjoyed a meal at Flanigan’s to celebrate before the Thanksgiving holiday. This was our first outing to a sit-down restaurant as a class. During the classes leading up to our outing, the students learned about the types of meals offered at a restaurant (appetizer, drink, entrée, dessert), how to choose a meal, how to order, manners, and budgeting while eating out. The students reviewed the menu online and chose their desired meal, then practiced ordering in the classroom. The students had a great time at Flanigan’s on the day of our outing. Each student ordered their own meal, patiently waited for the food to arrive, engaged in conversation with their peers while waiting, and then enjoyed their meals. We discussed the trip with the students during the next class period and the students are all excited for the next outing!
