Mother’s Day Gifts

The B.R.I.D.G.E.S. students combined an educational Community Based Instruction (CBI) with honoring their mothers for Mother’s Day.  In preparation for making a gift for Mother’s Day, facilitators Mrs. Karla Lama and Mrs. Courtney Henry, discussed the importance of empathy, giving to others and selflessness with the class.

The students were each provided a budget of $15.00 and made a list of 4 items that they thought their mother would like. Some of the items the students wrote down were: chips, pretzels, soda, candy, chocolate, candles, lotion and nail polish. In addition to those items, students added paint, paintbrushes, and cards to their list. The next step was to go to Walmart to purchase the items they needed.

Students had to locate their items at Walmart and ask for assistance from store employees when needed. They were allowed to buy only the items on their shopping list. This was a great exercise in paying attention to the preferences of others while maintaining self-restraint from making “impulse buys.”.

The students then used the self-checkout and a gift card to purchase their items. Students took turns scanning their items, determining if their items were under budget, bagging their items, and paying with a card.

Once they were back in the classroom, students painted and put together wooden toolboxes, which would serve as gift boxes for their Mother’s Day gifts. The students are excited to give the gifts that they shopped for and made for their mom!

Lunch at the Park

The B.R.I.D.G.E.S. students enjoyed a beautiful day at the park having a delicious lunch from Chik-Fil-A for their Community Based Instruction (CBI) fieldtrip. The day before heading to the park, students reviewed the Chik-Fil-A menu and decided what they wanted to eat.

As the students headed over to the park on the bus, facilitator Mrs. Karla Lama went to Chik-Fil-A and picked up the students’ food orders. Most of the students enjoyed the chicken nuggets and fries, but Daniel decided to go on the healthy side-he ordered a salad. After lunch, students headed over to the basketball court and had fun playing basketball. Diego and Luis even played a little soccer!

What a great way to spend the day together, outside enjoying lunch and some fun!

Weston Diner

Weston Diner

This week, students in the B.R.I.D.G.E.S. class went to the Weston Diner for their weekly Community Based Instruction (C.B.I.) fieldtrip, to enjoy a delicious lunch! Many of the students had never been to the Weston Diner and were very excited to go and experience the American cuisine that promises to be like “a taste of home.”

Students took time to look over the menu in class, prior to heading to the diner. They had so much to choose from: breakfast and/or lunch items. All the students decided to order lunch. They also talked and practiced what good manners in a restaurant would be, using appropriate voice tone, and how to politely order from the waiter.

 Once they headed to the diner, each student ordered their own food. Students ordered chicken nuggets, burgers, wraps and salads! After lunch, time was spent socializing with one another, talking about the latest Marvel movie and what everyone was going to do on Mother’s Day.

Students continue to practice their Resources, Independence, Growth, Empowerment and Social Skills are they go out each week on their CBIs. Keep up the great work!

If You Don’t Ask for Boar’s Head, We Can’t Be Friends

This week, students in the B.R.I.D.G.E.S.  class made their way to Publix to order a delicious pub sub for lunch! To prepare for this Community Based Instruction (CBI), students took time to look over the menu online, and decided on the many different choices of bread, meat, cheese, and toppings that could go on top of their sub.  After looking at all their options, students wrote down what they wanted on an index card to bring with them when they placed their order.

Since the students had been to Publix several times on various CBIs, they knew right where they needed to go to order their subs! Each student had the opportunity to order what they wanted (as they brought their index card with them) and did a great job!

Everyone was looking forward to getting back to school to enjoy their delicious sub they had ordered on their own! We are so proud of the progress our B.R.I.D.G.E.S. students are making as they continue to practice their Independence, Growth, Empowerment and Social Skills during each of their CBIs!

BurgerFi Community Based Instruction

BurgerFi Community Based Instruction

“Redefining the Way the World Eats Burgers” proved to be true for the B.R.I.D.G.E.S. students when they headed to BurgerFi for the Community Based Instruction (CBI) activity.

When the students arrived, they were greeted by a server who made them all feel welcome as he took their orders. After each student ordered their meal and used their debit card to pay, they waited to receive their tray of food. Then they headed to find a table with their friends, to spend their lunch time socializing with one another. Conversations centered around how good the burgers were! Even though they were more expensive than other fast-food restaurants, the students agreed it was worth it!

Students also spoke about what they did during their Spring Break. Vincent shared about his week at Disney World, Nicholas shared what he did in Las Vegas with his family and many of the students shared that they enjoyed just staying home and catching up on sleep!

We are so proud of the B.R.I.D.G.E.S students as they continue each week heading out on their CBIs, and practicing their Budgeting, Resources, Independence, Development, Empowerment and Social Skills.
